Are you considering purchasing Student Select Health Insurance? To be eligible for Student Select coverage, you must be a full-time college student under the age of 30. The school you attend must be a state-accredited college or university. You must maintain your full-time student status for a minimum of 31 days following the effective date of the policy. Full-time student status is defined as an undergraduate student taking nine or more college credits or a full-time graduate student. Here are some other things to understand about Student Select coverage:

It is critical that you are honest in your application for health insurance. If medical conditions are not adequately disclosed, your policy could be rescinded back to the policy issue date or coverage could be denied. Your completed application becomes a permanent part of your insurance contract.

The underwriting guidelines for individual health insurance are very strict. More than half of all applicants are either declined outright or offered policies limited by exclusions or riders (meaning they will deny coverage for a specified pre-existing condition). If you do get declined, or are offered a policy with riders or exclusions, if you are a resident of Wisconsin, you can still qualify for HIRSP (see below).

If you are applying for a plan that includes yourself and dependents, the carrier does not have to accept the family as a whole. Carriers reserve the right to decline or rider any family member based on underwriting criteria.

The Student Select policy does not cover pre-existing conditions that existed prior to the policy effective date. Expenses for these pre-existing conditions incurred during the first 12 months of the policy are not covered in most states.

The Student Select policy does not cover routine physical exams; interscholastic and intercollegiate sports injuries; expenses incurred outside the United States; prescription drugs; pregnancy or childbirth; and other conditions as specified in the policy.

The purpose of Student Select policy is to provide coverage for unexpected illnesses and accidents.

The Student Select policy is renewable, individual health insurance. If you change schools, take a semester off or have to leave school, Student Select travels with you. Since Student Select is renewable, you can keep your coverage for as long as it's needed through the age of 63.

Payment options. You can make payment on either a semi-annual or annual basis. You need to make payment up-front and refunds are not available if you end the policy prematurely. The only exception to this is the initial 10 days of coverage. During that time you would be able to receive a 100% refund. Beyond that you would not receive a refund for any reason.

If you are declined for coverage and you are a Wisconsin resident, you can apply for a state government-run plan called HIRSP. For more details on how this plan works, go to www.hirsp.org.

We hope this information helps you. Above is a chart of carrier options, along with instructions on how you can obtain an online quote.
